A useful starting point
Arrange secured equipment on a clear surface at home. Photograph the collection and record the names of items that are hard to identify in the image. This gives you a comparison point for future packing. Do not include private documents or information you would not want in a shared photograph.
Try this sequence
- Secure sharp pieces before arranging the kit
- Use even light and a clear surface
- Pair the image with a written list
- Update the record when equipment changes
A small worked example
Take a second inventory photograph only after a genuine change to the collection. Keep the earlier image with its date so the comparison has context. The written list should still identify any component whose shape alone is difficult to recognise.
What to keep in your notes
Give the record a date and a recognisable title. Revisit it when planning, but check all time-sensitive information again through the appropriate current source. Your previous experience belongs in the notebook alongside those checks, rather than replacing them.
