Check straps and closures before packing

A quick external inspection belongs before filling the bag.

A useful starting point

Look at closures, seams and attachments while the bag is empty enough to inspect. Do not overload a damaged bag or assume a weak fitting can be ignored for a short trip. Product instructions and the actual condition of the equipment should guide any repair or replacement decision.

Try this sequence

  1. Inspect the empty bag in daylight
  2. Notice worn seams and damaged fittings
  3. Check closures gently without force
  4. Set aside a bag with an uncertain condition

A small worked example

A worn attachment may become difficult to see once the bag is full. Inspect it before loading and document any uncertainty. Do not decide that a shorter trip makes questionable equipment suitable; the condition still requires an appropriate assessment.

What to keep in your notes

Photographs can help recall the task but may omit the route, conditions or equipment labels. Pair an image with the specific note it supports. Keep irrelevant assumptions out of the caption, and do not treat an attractive frame as confirmation that a place or method is suitable.
